TRAINING PROGRAMME - CLICK HERE

Recognized Training Centre

The Club is a Royal Yachting Association Recognized Training Centre and as such it is inspected annually. We own 16 dinghies plus 2 powerboats which are available for training purposes. The Clubroom is fully equipped as a comfortable classroom for on-shore theory. We are fortunate in having members who hold current RYA instructor or coach qualifications and instruct or coach on a volunteer basis.
The Club runs various formal RYA dinghy & powerboat courses and issues RYA certificates which are recognized throughout the world and additionally provides instructor or coach led opportunities to develop skills. We take dinghy sailors from 8 years old onwards and can offer total beginner to advanced dinghy modules. In addition to the formal courses, Dolphins provides Stage 1 juniors with regular evening opportunities to gain more time on the water while Race Coaching provides opportunities for the more advanced juniors and adults to improve their sailing skills.
Anyone interested in formal dinghy courses or to book a place on one of the training courses should contact our Training Principal.
Our Chief Race Coach is interested in hearing from anyone who would like some Race Coaching sessions.
The Club actively promotes powerboat courses (Level 2 and Safety Boat) for members keen to help with safety on the water and prices this training at the ‘break even’ rate. We also offer continuation or refresher powerboat training – please let training@chanonry.org.uk know if you wish to attend any of these courses or training sessions.
The Club’s ethos is to offer training to members – including of course new members - at a fraction of the price charged commercially without compromising on quality. The programme will be available on this page as soon as it is agreed.

DOLPHINS

On a fortnightly basis the Club runs the following improver training:
  • Chanonry Dolphins on Thursday evenings
Dolphins Entry Level - the entry level is RYA Stage 1. As a brief reminder Stage 1 means the ability to rig, launch, recover, de-rig (with adult assistance - more on this below) and sail across the wind (reaching) tacking at 'both ends'. Please note that the Oppis and Teras are strictly single handed boats.

Consent Form

Participants in Junior training and coaching need to bring a completed consent form to their first session.

Parent Power

Parental help with Dolphins is essential to make these evenings run successfully. Help is required with rigging, de-rigging, launching, recovering, acting as the shore contact and assisting the instructors on the safety boats. The more the parents help, the more time we can spend on the water. Similarly, help from parents of juniors taking part in Race Coaching is always useful.

While most of the training for those helping out is ‘on the job training’ we can provide training on request – please contact: Training Principal.

Training Programme 2020

Shore-based training is conducted during the winter months. If there is sufficient interest, the Club can organize any RYA shore-based course ranging from Yachtmaster Off-shore to Diesel Maintenance. We can also arrange for informal training or talks on most boat related topics. Wintertime is also when most maintenance is done on Club boats and help is much appreciated! Book course places at training@chanonry.org.uk.
