CHANONRY ROWING

We love coastal rowing at Chanonry, and it's an easy way to get out on the water in the company of others. You don't even need to buy any special equipment or clothing. All ages and abilities can row, we have an adapted seat in one boat. We provide a variety of opportunities from short social rows (with a cup of tea in the clubhouse after), longer rows to Chanonry Point, Rosemarkie or Avoch or more energetic training sessions. There are also opportunities to take part in expeditions or regattas.

We row in our club built St Ayles skiffs, Chanonry Maid and Silver Darling, from the clubhouse at Fortrose Harbour.  With four oars and a Cox there are great opportunities for all ages to keep fit and active all year round.

COVID 19

Under Level 4 of the Scottish Government COVID restrictions we are unable to row at present. However, we hope that we may be able to start from 17 May. See our Return to Boating page for information and updates.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Five Miles from Home is a series of local time trials that allows us to have some competitive fun while we are unable to travel. The dates are 7-9 May, 4-6 June and 9-11 July. There are alternative land based challenges if restrictions mean we are unable to row (likely for 7-9 May). Please signup on the Teamup calendar below and we'll sort out teams.
There's also an Alternative Challenge is open to kayaks, SUPs and canoes!

START ROWING

Following the Scottish Government’s announcement on the 20th September 2020 we are now able to start rowing again, with suitable mitigation measures in place. The Scottish Coastal Rowing Association has helpfully provided guidance which we’ve used to create our Return to Rowing procedures. Please familiarise yourself with this before booking and attending a session. Sign up on the Teamup calendar is essential for contact tracing.

Regular open rowing sessions are held throughout the year. Current programme:

Wednesdays 10:00 to 12:00 (currently cancelled)
Sundays 10:30 to 12:00 (currently cancelled)

If you have a crew, with a cox, that would like to book a regular session email rowing@chanonry.org.uk

We welcome rowers of all ages from all over the Highlands. You don't need to be super fit or able to get out on the water with us. If you have any particular needs let us know and we'll try to work out how best to get you out. We have a boat with an adaptive seat for people with limited core strength. Most of our activity is social rowing at a pace and level to suit those going out. Children over 12 years can attend as per our child involvement guidelines.

Rowing at Chanonry is very affordable at only £39 per year for adults and £29 for seniors. There are no session charges.
Membership details and joining instructions.

Come and Try

We offer Come and Try sessions for anyone interested in giving rowing a go before joining. Email rowing@chanonry.org.uk to organise your session.

BOOK ROWING

It's simple to sign up to a rowing session. In the calendar simply click on the session you'd like to attend. Click Signup and then add your name and email address. You can also add comments. If you change your mind and want to cancel then email rowing@chanonry.org.uk and we'll remove it.
Before each session check there are enough rowers to go ahead. If in doubt, email the event organiser or rowing@chanonry.org.uk.

The link to the calendars for your browser is https://teamup.com/ksmfmpu874sbbfqhws. You can also use this link on the Teamup app which is very handy for booking on the go.

We also recommend you join the Chanonry Coastal Rowing facebook group to keep up to date with and share news of our activities. There is also a regular rowing email bulletin for members who wish to opt in.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ROWING

More information about rowing technique and our health and safety documents are on the Rowing Information and Documents page.

ROWING CALENDAR

The calendar below shows only the rowing sessions. See all the sailing, rowing, training and social events on the main calendar.

WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING

You may get wet, up to your knees. Wear stuff that can get wet on your feet and legs. Old trainers, sandals, Crocs etc. Wellies can work if there are not too many waves. On top wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing, preferably synthetic or wool. Gloves can be helpful, sailing or cycling gloves will work. A waterproof top will keep the wind and rain out. The club can provide lifejackets which must be worn on the water at all times. Showers, changing facilities and a galley for making hot drinks are available in the clubhouse. (NB with current COVID restrictions we are only able to access the clubhouse for toilets and to collect equipment.)
