CLUB FACILITIES - SAFETY BOATS
|
Please use Ness during the week and Beauly at weekends when only one safety boat is required
The Club owns two 5 metre Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RIBs) manufactured by Humber and powered by Yamaha outboard engines. The RIBs, referred to as NESS (old one) and BEAULY (new one), were commissioned in July 2007 and March 2010 respectively and are available for use by members in connection with Club activities. The RIBs are most often used to provide safety boat cover at Club events. When only one safety boat is required, NESS should be used during the week, and BEAULY at weekends to help ensure even usage of both.
MEIKLE was added to our fleet in August 2020 and is a T3.2m Honda Honwave Air V floor fitted with a 15hp Honda tiller steered 4 stroke outboard. She is available for the use of individual Club members supporting
on the water activities for Club members in “Member Organised Activity”. She may also be used as a support boat for Club activities “Club Organised Activity”. She is intended for use where there are not enough members present to launch and recover a 5m RIB. Ideally MEIKLE will have a crew of 2, at least one of whom must be a current Safety Officer volunteer or Instructor or Coach. In benign conditions, when supporting fewer than 7 dinghies, a crew of one may be appropriate, that person to be a current Safety Officer volunteer or Instructor or Coach.
Members using the Safety Boats should be suitably experienced and trained. For details of powerboat training available at the Club please contact the Training Principal.
Separate logbooks are maintained in respect of NESS, BEAULY and MEIKLE. These are located in the race office and should be written up after use of the boats to record any matters which require the attention of the Safety Boat Lead. If the fault is serious and limits the use of a Safety Boat, then phone or email the Safety Boats Lead and Sailing Secretary using their contacts on the Appointments and Volunteers page.
Details of Safety Officer duties are set out in the Safety Boat Crews section. The Club encourages safety boat crews to undertake RYA powerboat handling, safety boat and first aid courses. Safety boat skills training will be offered by our qualified volunteer Power/ Safety Boat Instructors. Members who are interested in this should contact Helen Jenner. For members who reach the required standards, RYA powerboat and safety boat certificates can be issued.
