Welcome to Chanonry Sailing Club's July newsletter which is designed to keep you up to speed with events happening at the Club. This month we have a number of notices and events to highlight as detailed below.
Condolences
Club members maybe aware that one of our cruiser members, Peter Jones, died recently in Fortrose Bay during a visit by tender to his motor cruiser on the moorings. Peter was a relatively new member, having joined the Sailing Club last year. He started sailing on Lake Windermere in the 1970s and has sailed in many other areas since, spending a lot of time more recently cruising with his wife on the west coast for which he had a particular love, especially around the outer Isles. Peter had a deep love for being on the water and was a very experienced sailor who had great respect for the sea. We are all saddened to hear of his death and have passed on our condolences to his widow, Val. For those of us who had got to know him a little our thoughts are with his family.
Training Programme for Adult and Youth Sailors
The season is progressing well although we are still waiting for summer to arrive! We have seen a good turn out for courses, racing and social sailing with all of our junior and adult courses now fully booked. Congratulations to our newly qualified Level 1, 2 and 3 Adult sailors and also to our 6 newly qualified Junior Stage 1 sailors who are pictured in the main image at the top of the newsletter. All had a fantastic time under the watchful eye of and brilliant instruction from Rob Bashford, Magnus Henry and Helen Jenner.
Events Coming Up
We have a great programme of sailing lined up for you throughout July and August with regular opportunities to race and enjoy some social sailing. For full details please see our Calendar page on the Club website. As usual we are always looking for volunteers to support these events so if you have some spare time and would like to get involved please go to our Duty Rota page.
We have two big events coming up over the next 2 months. The first is the Scottish Laser Traveller event on Saturday 16th July and Sunday 17th July at Chanonry Sailing Club. Details are now available on the Club website. Preparations are well under way and no doubt it will be a fabulous weekend for sailors and non-sailors alike with morning bacon rolls, lunchtime snacks and hot food available ... and the bar will be open! All are welcome so please do come along and support us.
Our second event is our Annual Regatta on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August. We are always looking for volunteers during such events and Janet Witheridge would appreciate some extra help with advance cooking and serving over the weekends of the Scottish Laser Traveller and Annual Regatta. If you are able to assist Janet please contact her on[email protected].
Congratulations!
Congratulations to our youth Club sailors Thomas Hardie, Magnus Henry, Claire Holliday and Kyle Cameron. Kyle Cameron represented Avoch Primary School, coming 3rd overall in the Scottish Primary Schools category and 4th in the Academy and Primary Scottish Optimist Dinghy Fleet category. Kyle also recently received an Excellence Award and a grant from Ross & Cromarty Sports Council towards his achievement, having been selected to represent Scotland in the Optimist Class for the Eric Twiname Championships 2016 at Rutland Water.
