Friday Evening Sailing
Sailing on Friday evenings
will be every second and fourth Friday of the month from May
to August inclusive. These Fridays are when the high tides are generally around
the evening, so that you don’t have to drag your boat too far!
Friday Evenings are an opportunity for members to sail with safety cover but without the pressures of racing. There will be a Safety Officer and a Safety Crew, but no Organiser. Friday Evenings are not a training activity.
If the Safety Officer feels that conditions are unsuitable he or she will either not launch the Safety Boat or will withdraw safety cover if conditions deteriorate. He or she will do this AFTER informing the sailors on the water and giving them enough time to return to shore. Adults sailing their own dinghies who wish to do so may, of course, continue to sail at their own risk, however, all Club dinghies must be returned to the shore. Parents or adults in loco parentis for juniors out in their own boats are responsible for deciding whether their junior may continue – the Safety Boat crew can relay messages if necessary.
The Safety Officer will be responsible for opening-up and locking-up the Club, preparing sign on/sign off sheets, keeping radio contact with the Safety Boat and checking that everyone is signed off the water at the end of the session. They will also take a note of members using the Club Dinghies, registering that they are competent (see below) if it is that sailor’s first Friday evening of the season and take money for use of the Club dinghies.
Members may sail their own boats at no charge. Their guests are welcome, but will be expected to join the Club after 3 sessions if they wish to continue.
Members wanting to sail Club boats will be subject to the following conditions:

Members wanting to sail Club boats will be subject to the following conditions:
- Parents of juniors will still be responsible for their children and must either stay at the Club or nominate a suitable adult to act “in loco parentis”.
- There will be a charge of £3 per person per session. (Sea Cadets or Sea Scouts wishing to use the Tera dinghies as part of a cadet or scout organised activity will not be charged).
- On the 1st Friday they attend, members will be required to produce a Stage 2 / Level 2 certificate or note from the Chief Instructor confirming their competence to sail a dinghy unsupervised in normal conditions. This will be entered into a Register by the Organiser.
- Dinghies designed to be single-handers may be sailed by only one person at a time.
- Those wishing to use Club dinghies will do so on a “first come, first served” basis. Sailors are expected to agree dinghy allocation between themselves – it may be necessary to swap at “half-time” so that everyone has a chance to sail. For this reason the charge is less than for use of Club dinghies at other times.
More Sailing Opportunities for Juniors
The Club runs Chanonry Dolphins and Chanonry Champs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings respectively at 2 weekly intervals.
The Dolphins are juniors with Stage 1 (or higher if space permits) who want to gain time on the water with instructors and safety boats on hand.
The Champs are the more advanced juniors (Stage 2 or 3) who want to improve their ability to sail faster and these sessions are coach led. For more details please see the training page.

More Sailing Opportunities for the young & not so young
