GAIDHEALTACHD SAILING NORTH OF SCOTLAND
DINGHY CHAMPIONSHIP 2008

The first GS sponsored North of Scotland Dinghy Championship was contested during Chanonry Sailing Club’s annual regatta on 2 & 3 August. The competition provided individual prizes for the winning adult and junior boats from clubs north of a line from Stonehaven to Oban plus a prize for the highest placed club (best 2 boats to count) and was contested as part of the regatta handicap race series.

Saturday saw force 4 conditions increasing to the low end of force 5 for the last of 3 races providing excellent conditions for experienced and fit sailors with great surfing opportunities on the waves. Sunday was a complete contrast with light winds and some large shifts to really test tactical abilities and nerve for the second group of 3 races with a backing wind forcing race officer Carol Newman to call for a relaying of all marks for the last race.

Twenty one boats entered from 9 different clubs with 7 clubs and 19 boats eligible to contest the North of Scotland Dinghy Championship. Unfortunately there were no junior entries probably due to a clash in dates with the Topper Nationals and a Laser traveller.

There was some very close racing with the RS300s dominating the top of the handicap leader board on both days with Ian Baillie (Dalgety Bay SC) the winner of all 6 of the races very closely followed by Ben Yeats (Chanonry SC) who was second 5 times. Five different clubs were represented in the top 5 places but hosts, Chanonry SC, perhaps with the advantage of ‘playing at home’, took 6th & 7th place clinching the club prize with Ben Yeats (also of Chanonry SC) taking the adult North of Scotland Dinghy Sailor 2008 crown as the highest placed eligible sailor.

Prizes – framed photos of the winning boats taken by Neil MacGregor and vouchers generously donated by Caley Marina – were presented by Donald MacKenzie, the Vice-Chairman of Gaidhealtachd Sailing.

GS intends for this to become an annual event but the venue has yet to be set for 2009 and any club north of the line Stonehaven to Oban is invited to bid for the event by contacting the Chairman of GS.
