May 2003 Newsletter
Welcome to the new sailing season of 2003. We all trust that we will enjoy better weather than last year! You should all have the new handbooks for this season, but I have listed some of the events below as a reminder.
However some hardy souls have already started their season, with the Frostbite
Challenge proving very successful in Muirton Basin. (Alfie and Richard keeping
Chanonry to the fore) and even the cruisers enjoying winter sailing on Loch
Ness. (However costly!!) The Club hosted a North of Scotland Sailing weekend
recently which proved a great success with 46 boats and 48 participants. They
have already written to us hoping to repeat the event!
A very interesting talk on Wave Management was enjoyed on the 26th March and
Ben Yeats deserves many thanks for coming to our rescue at short notice. To
start the season off, almost 60 people enjoyed a curry night in the clubhouse
at the end of April and Helen Rowson, amongst others, should be congratulated
for making the night the success it was.
Elsewhere, the clubhouse balcony has been repaired with new see-through
panels, and the Harbour Repair Programme continues.
I sincerely believe that we can look forward to an exciting season, with all
of the committees combining to provide a great variety of events, and as a
club we are hosting many open, and traveller events, not to mention the West
Patch Regatta, which will bring numerous other competitors and their boats to
the club over the summer.
Finally, I hope to see all of you at the club over the season whether
competing, officiating or simply 'messing about in boats'.
See you on the water
Ewen Smith (Commodore Chanonry SC)
UP AND COMING EVENTS
FRIDAY CLUB EVENINGS As an experiment Friday club evenings will be run through the school summer term between 7 and 9pm from May 9th until June 27th . These will be an extra and informal opportunity for cadets, new members, less experienced and improving sailors to get on the water and sail with a safety boat in attendance. There will be no pressure to train or race, although there may be opportunities for informal training and racing.
TUESDAY TRAINING EVENINGS
Ever wanted to ensure that 'Good Start' or 'quicker lap Time' ? Well this is
now on hand with fortnightly training available on Tuesday Evenings from 6th
May. There will be a charge of £6 per session or £20 for all four.
HAVE A GO DAY Saturday 17 May, 11am to 4pm This is when the club invites the public to come along and inspect our facilities, get a taste of sailing, meet some of the members, enjoy some refreshment and hopefully join the club. The event will take place between 11am and 4pm. We will need as many members as possible to come along and help out on what is usually a very busy day. Please let Helen Rowson (01381 600539) or Iain McCulloch (01463 234338) know if you can help. The sort of help we are after is members who can take visitors out for a sail in a dinghy or a cruiser and we'd also appreciate being able to borrow any spare buoyancy aids you may have. The event this year is being held in association with 'Great Glen Week', which encourages all to 'Get Active on the Great Glen'. The lifeboat is also likely to be in attendance. FAMILY BOATING DAY Saturday 24 May, 12 noon We hope that more members will feel the urge to come and mess about, to sail, to row, potter and generally make use of boats of all kinds. This is an informal day for all the family to get on the water. The clubhouse is also waiting to be used for lunches and teas etc. HENRY SCRIMSHAW MEMORIAL CRUISE Sat/Sun 24/25 May, 11am This is a cruise in company to Cromarty with the intention of staying overnight. Access to moorings or to Cromarty harbour may be available. The event is fairly relaxed and if you are interested please contact Dave Watson on 01463 811430 to make arrangements. RNLI NESS CUP Sunday 1 June, 11am This is a traditional event that has been running for years in various formats. The race has an entry fee that goes to the RNLI whose services we all hope we will never need although the lifeboats seem to get busier every year. The Ladies Lifeboat Committee has a stall with souvenirs on sale. Moneys collected are donated to the RNLI - please come along and help us with this event if you can. The race is open to cruisers and dinghies and the course normally starts at Fortrose and comprises a fairly large triangular course in the Inverness Firth. The 11 o'clock start is designed to catch the tide and to allow for some festivity/ recovery/ airing of excuses at the clubhouse after the race. CLUB SAIL/CYCLE EVENT Sunday 15 June, 11am A social outing for dinghies and cruisers. The plan is to form teams which will spilt up such that half the team cycles to Munlochy Bay while the other half sails there. Then the cyclists and sailors swap round and return to Fortrose. We could add in timing of each leg to add a bit of competition. Bring your own picnic. More detailed arrangements available soon.
LOST PROPERTY!
We appear to be missing a club GP14 Launching Trailer. I am sure this will
have been taken in error, but would be grateful if members could check their
equipment and if they have suddenly gained this trailer we would appreciate
it's return!!
